Memories of Life in Downers

Downtown Downers Grove
Library Memories
I grew up in Downers Grove. When I was in about 4th
grade, the Children's Library, in the basement, was about
the only cool place in town. I remember walking to the
library every other day during the summer I was in 4th
grade. I read the entire set of Wizard of Oz books.
I also remember the really wonderful Frieda Humphries
telling me that I would not understand The Prince of
Foxes when I, a junior high student, was checking it
out. I did enjoy it and I did understand it. Many years
later I became a school librarian. I never told a student
that he would not be able to read, or understand a book
being checked out.
I am retired now, and continue to be grateful for the
many ways that our superb library has enriched my life.
