H1N1 Information
H1N1 and the Downers Grove Public Library
- The Centers for Disease Control reports that H1N1 may be contracted from a flat surface such as counter top or book for up to 8 hours. The good news for patrons is that it takes about 24 hours to process and re-shelve materials that have been returned to the library. Library staff will take appropriate precautions when checking in, sorting, and shelving materials.
- Patrons are urged to follow good hygiene rules while in the library or other public places. Catch sneezes in a tissue or the crook of an elbow. Patrons are urged to be respectful of others and stay home if they are ill.
- Library staff sanitize public computer keyboards and mice once each day. Disinfectant wipes and hand sanitizer are always available for patrons at library service desks.
- While library staff are not qualified to diagnose illness, staff have been directed to maintain a safe distance between themselves and library patrons who exhibit flu-like symptoms. For example, staff will talk a patron through a computer search rather than use the keyboard or mouse that a patron who appears ill has been using.
- If flu conditions worsen, health authorities may urge residents to increase social distancing to avoid contact with others who may be infected. If this occurs, library programs and public meetings in the Meeting and Conference Rooms will be canceled until conditions improve.
