Net-Tips – Using the Help Feature for Microsoft Products

Whether you are using Microsoft Word, Excel, Access or PowerPoint, try the following sources for help.

• Ask a Question box
Type your question in the Type a Question for Help box on the menu bar, in the upper right side.

• Office Assistant
Open the Office Assistant (an animated figure) by clicking on Help and selecting Show the Office Assistant. When the Assistant appears on the screen, click on it and a box will appear where you can type your question. You can turn off the Office Assistant by right-clicking on the Assistant and selecting Hide, or by clicking on Help and selecting Hide the Office Assistant.

• Screen Tips
From the Help menu, click What’s This? and then click the area for which you want help.

For help with an option in a dialog box, such as the font size option in the font dialog box, click the question mark in the upper right corner of the dialog box, and then click on the option.

To see the name of a toolbar button, rest the pointer over the button. The name will appear.

• Help on the Web
You can connect to the Microsoft Office Web site and other Microsoft Web sites directly from any Microsoft Office program by using the Office on the Web command on the Help menu.

• For Further Assistance
For further assistance on Microsoft Office products, as well as many other computer programs, you may wish to consult some of the many books available at the library. The librarians at the Reference Desk can show you where these books are located.
