All Junior Room programs and storytimes will be held in the Junior Room’s Program Room unless otherwise noted.

+ Downers Grove library card required at time of registration. First day walk-in registration begins at 9:00 a.m. and phone registration begins at 10:00 a.m.

For Families
The Great American Challenge
Fri., June 20, 7 p.m.+
Register beginning Fri., June 6
Join us for a fast-paced, buzzer-banging evening of game trivia to celebrate The Reading Game Summer Reading Club. American Eagle Productions is bringing the lights, music, and set for the feel of a real game show. Contestants will be selected from the audience to answer trivia questions about games of all kinds. Open to children entering grades K – 8 and their families. Group Limit: 100. This program will be held in the library’s meeting room.

Open Storytimes:
Summer Storytimes with Miss Mouse
Mondays, June 16 – July 21, 9:30 – 10:00 a.m.*
Tuesdays, June 17 – July 22, 9:30 – 10:00 a.m.*
Come and join the fun as we enjoy picture books, songs, fingerplays, and more! Storytimes held during the same week may repeat stories and activities.

Saturday Morning Storytime
Saturdays, May 3 – June 21, 9:30 – 10 a.m.*
Join us for this toddler and preschool storytime. There is no storytime on Sat., June 28 when the library will be closed due to Heritage Festival.

Learning Spanish Storytime
Wed., May 7, 11:00 – 11:30 a.m.*
Wed., June 4, 11:00 – 11:30 a.m.*
Young children are uniquely suited to learning a second language. Join an instructor from Language Stars as he or she presents a storytime designed to introduce preschoolers to a new language. The program is open to preschoolers and attending children must be supervised by an adult. These storytimes will be presented the first Wednesday of each month throughout the summer.

Pajama Storytime
Wed., June 25, 7:00 – 7:30 p.m.+*
Register beginning Wed., June 11
Children of all ages—come in your pajamas and bring a stuffed animal, too! Group limit: 75. Due to Heritage Festival, pajama storytime is moving to Wednesday this month. Pajama Storytimes will continue on the last Thursday of the month in July and August.

For Preschoolers
Bubblegum Bookland Read-to-Me Club
Even the youngest book lovers (babies, toddlers, preschoolers, etc.) can earn fun prizes this summer by listening to stories as members of our Read-To-Me Club. Registration starts Monday, May 19.

For School-Age Children
Author Rick Riordan
Mon., May 12, 7 p.m.
Rick Riordan, writer of the popular book series Percy Jackson and the Olympians, will be at the library signing the latest book in his series, The Battle of the Labyrinth. The program will be held in the library’s main meeting room. This program is co-sponsored by the Downers Grove Public Library and Anderson’s Bookshop.

The Reading Game Summer Reading Club
Summer is fast approaching and that means the Junior Room’s 2008 Summer Reading Club will be coming your way! This year get in the game and play The Reading Game! Students in kidergarten through eighth grade can earn great prizes just for reading books! Registration starts Monday, May 19. Students in District #58 schools (grades K – 6) will be registered at their schools between May 19 and May 30.

Weekly Quiz
June 6 – Aug. 8
Test your knowledge of boardgames, candy, and other fun stuff by entering the Junior Room’s weekly quiz this summer. Enter once each week! Eight winners will be chosen randomly from correct entries to receive a small prize each week.

The Daily Search
June 9 – Aug. 1
The first person (preschool – 8th grade) each day to find the silver briefcase and return it to the Junior Room desk can trade the case back and make a deal for a small prize. You may only claim one prize during the summer.

Summer Volunteers
Teens entering 7th – 10th grades who are interested in a first work experience may apply to volunteer to spend 1 1/2 hours a week working in the library for a seven-week period. This year we are taking applications for 25 summer volunteer slots. Slots will be filled by a random selection from received applications. Applications will be available at the Junior Room desk starting May 6. Applications must be completed and returned by May 31 for consideration. Applicants will be notified by phone by June 4. Volunteers will be required to attend an introductory training session at one of the following times:
Mon., June 9, 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.+
Tues., June 10, 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.+
Thurs., June 12, 11:00 a.m. – 12 noon+

Coming in July:
Chess for Kids
Wednesdays, July 2 – 30, 1:30 – 2:30 p.m.+
Register beginning Thurs., June 19
Get in the game this summer by learning to play chess better with our “Chess for Kids” classes.  The five-week program is for beginners and intermediate level players. Jim Egerton from Chess-Now will be teaching.  Grade-school age enrollees are expected to attend the five weeks of sessions if they sign up for the class.  The one-hour classes will cover strategy and tactics. Make your best move of the summer by playing chess. Open to children entering grades 3 – 8. Group limit: 24.
