How Do I Use My Laptop on the DGPL WiFi Network?

Any laptop equipped with an 802.11a or 802.11b compatible wireless network card should be able to access the Downers Grove Public Library wireless network for the public. Your operating system should be Windows 98 or higher. Most network cards will automatically search for and find the strongest wireless access point and connect you to it as long as your card is set to obtain the IP address automatically and to obtain the DNS server address automatically.

Important! Read this before you start.
• If you have a pop-up blocker installed, disable it during the login process.
You can enable it after the Sonic Wall has granted you access. The location of the pop-up blocker can vary depending on your computer settings. On many computers the pop-up blocker is located in the ‘Tools’ section, under ‘Pop Up Blocker’, or in the Control Panel, under ‘Network’. If the Google toolbar has been installed on your computer, you can click on the ‘block pop-up’ toolbar. Click on the toolbar to see the popup menu and then click “Always Allow Pop ups from This Site.”

• If you have a firewall, disable it. Firewall settings are usually found on the ‘Advanced’ tab in your Wireless Network Connections. You can enable it once the Sonic Wall has granted you access.

To access the wireless network:
• Open your Internet browser.
• ‘Authentication Required’ window will open. Click on “Click here to log in.”
• When prompted for name and password, use patron for name and patron for password.
• After reading the User Agreement page, click on “I agree.” (If the User Agreement page does not appear, check that both the pop-up blocker and firewall are disabled. Once they are disabled, start over from the beginning.)
• When the Sonic Wall user login box pops up, minimize it.
• Wait for the message “Sonic Wall has granted you access” to appear in the main browser.
• You can now type in any URL in the address bar to start searching the Internet.
• When you are through with your session, maximize the Sonic Wall user login box. Click on “Logout” to end your session.
Important: After three minutes of inactivity, a message will come up saying that Sonic Wall will time out after another three minutes of inactivity. You can extend your time by clicking on the ‘extend’ link.

If you are having problems connecting to the DGPL–Pub Wireless Network after doing the above, try these steps.
• Make sure you are connected to the DGPL–Pub network, not the one called DGPL. To do this, look for the wireless icon in your system tray. Right click on it to go to the configuration profile. Or you can use My Network Places to get to the configuration profile. Once it is open, look for the wireless network called DGPL–Pub, which should be listed as an available network. Highlight that network and click on ‘connect.’

• Remember to disable your pop-up blocker.

• Check the properties for the Wireless Network Connections.
+ Under the ‘General’ tab, make sure that all boxes have checkmarks, especially Internet Protocol TCP/IP. Check the Properties for Internet Protocol TCP/IP. Make sure ‘Obtain DNS server address automatically’ is selected.
+ In the Wireless Networks tab, make sure that the DGPL-Pub network is selected.
+ Also in the Wireless Networks tab, check the properties for all of the networks listed. Make sure data encryption is disabled. This should be done for all networks listed, not just DGPL–Pub, as any data encryption may affect your wireless access.
+ Under the Advanced tab, check the settings for the Windows Firewall. Disable the firewall.

• After you have made the necessary changes, you may need to close your browser, open it again and then refresh it.
