Homework and the Downers Grove Public Library
Here are a few ways in which the Downers Grove Public Library can help students and parents tackle homework assignments.
What the Library Can Do:
Keep In Touch Program:
Each week a Childrens Services Staff member calls the Downers Grove school librarians to find out about new assignments. We compile this information and may choose to place materials on our Homework Shelf so that in-demand materials remain available during the assignment period. Check out the Keep in Touch Assignment Board at the entrance to the Junior Room to see if materials have been set aside for your assignments.
Provide Materials and Information:
The Junior Room has a large and up-to-date collection for children through eighth grade. Junior Room staff can assist you in finding materials you need. We can help you find books, videos, magazine or newspaper articles, online reference material and other information in electronic reference sources.
Reference Collection:
Sometimes the best materials are sources found in our Reference Collection. These are materials that must be used in the library. Please bring money for the copier in case you need to make a copy from a reference book.
Book Collection:
With some exceptions, Junior Room books can be checked out for three weeks. Nonfiction materials have a limit of five items per call number (Limits include two books on any state, country or American Indian tribe.)
Looking for a Good Book?
Junior Room staff are happy to suggest juvenile reading materials to book lovers of all ages through 8th grade. We also have bibliographies and graded lists of recommended books.
Space to Work!
We have lots of space to work at the library, Study tables can seat groups of four. Two Study Rooms are available for groups of six or less and may be reserved up to seven days in advance.
Junior Room Services for Students through Eighth Grade!
Two word processing computers are available to students (with an I.D.) Printing is free up to 10 pages. After 10 pages, there is a charge of 5 cents per page.
Two Internet computers are available in the Junior Room to students through eighth grade. Students and parents must both sign the librarys Internet agreement to use these computers. Printing is free up to 10 pages. After 10 pages, there is a charge of 5 cents per page.
What Parents and Kids Can Do!
Bring:
Your library card so you can check out materials.
Money for the copy machine and telephone. Not all of our resources can be checked out, so you may need to take notes or photocopy the materials. Regular photocopies cost 10 cents per page. Color photocopies cost $1.00 per page
Supplies The Junior Room has limited basic supplies like notecards, paper, pens and pencils. However, if you need scissors, colored pencils, markers, crayons, highlighters or other materials, you need to bring them to the library.
A copy of your assignment to help librarians better understand your request.
Plan Ahead:
Try not to wait until the last minute to complete your homework assignments. Some assignments take time to research and materials may be scarce at the end of an assignment.
Ask!
The library staff is here to help you. Not all of your questions may be found in a single book or by using the computer. Some assignments require complex searches using many different kinds of sources. Junior Room staff are available, please ask!
