Murals, trompe l’oeil
Acquired: 1999; Location: Junior Room

John McDavitt is a muralist, illustrator, and product designer who was born and raised in the Chicago area. His early aptitude for art sparked a career that includes designing, illustrating and sculpting toys, giftware, collectibles, and logos, as well as fine mural works for residential and commercial clients. His work in the Junior Room includes an imaginative, two-dimensional Garden Wall that greets young visitors.

McDavitt’s dramatic Solar System mural anchors the area’s reading platform and is designed to attract intermediate grade youngsters.

A highlight of the Children’s Department is the fanciful Mouse House, a child-sized reading cottage that’s perfect for youngsters and their parents to relax with a good book. McDavitt’s creative tromp l’oeil details add interest to the structure.

The Downers Grove Junior Woman’s Club provided funding for John’s artwork in the Mouse House.
