Patricia McGrady

Frozen Orchard no.2
(photograph)
Acquired: 2001, Location: Reference Department

Evanston photographer Patricia McGrady is particularly drawn to rural landscapes, perhaps from spending summers, as a youth, on her grandparents’ farm in West Virginia. She has participated in art shows and exhibits since 1996. Her camera of choice is a Rolliflex TLR. McGrady uses a variety of films and papers for color work, while all her black and white photographs are printed on fiber-based paper. Some of her photos have sepia tones added, and several of her images are hand-colored.

Frozen Orchard no. 2 is the result of an afternoon drive in one of McGrady’s favorite locations, Suttons Bay, Michigan. “I love photographing winter,” she said, “because the snow renders everything with clean simple lines. You can almost feel the serenity and stillness of the moment. My compositions rely primarily on intuition,” she explains. “I feel my landscapes express a serenity and mystical quality. I hope their subtle richness will make the viewer stop and take a closer look.”
